Gurez Valley is a breathtaking high-altitude valley located in the northern part of Jammu and Kashmir, about 123 km from Srinagar and 86 km from Bandipora. Situated at an elevation of around 2,400 meters (8,000 feet), the valley is surrounded by majestic snow-covered Himalayan peaks and is traversed by the beautiful Kishanganga River.
Known as one of Kashmir’s most pristine and least-explored destinations, Gurez offers spectacular landscapes, lush meadows, dense forests, and crystal-clear rivers. The valley remains cut off from the rest of Kashmir during much of winter due to heavy snowfall over Razdan Pass, helping preserve its untouched beauty and unique culture.
One of Gurez’s most iconic landmarks is Habba Khatoon Peak, a pyramid-shaped mountain named after the famous Kashmiri poetess Habba Khatoon. The valley is also home to the Dard-Shin community, who speak the Shina language and maintain distinctive traditions, architecture, and customs.
Gurez is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Popular activities include trekking, camping, trout fishing, rafting on the Kishanganga River, wildlife spotting, and photography. The region is known for its rich biodiversity and stunning natural scenery.
